Abstract : A method was developed for the analysis of aqueous nitrates and nitrites. In this method, the sample is treated with benzene, hydrogen peroxide (for nitrite ion analysis), and sulfuric acid to produce nitrobenzene which is then detected by electron capture gas chromatography. This analytical method was adapted to determine oxides of nitrogen in air. A system to sample and analyze the hydrocarbon portion of jet engine exhaust to assess its environmental consequences was evaluated. Exhaust samples were collected and analyzed from five jet fuels and isooctane. The samples were collected on a combination sorbent trap packed with Tenax GC and Carbosieve B, then desorbed into a gas chromatograph.
