Abstract : The nature, properties, processing, and possible applications of two classes of materials are described: amorphous solids, particularly glassy metals, and metastable microcrystalline alloys. The thermodynamics and structural considerations of both amorphous and metastable metals and nonmetals are discussed in detail. The chemistry and properties of systems for which data are available also are described as are the processing limitations and methods. Application possibilities are discussed, and the report concludes with recommendations for research and development. (Author)
