Abstract : The program objective was to demonstrate by analysis fabrication, and testing of conical sections of ultra-high modulus graphite/epoxy structures that the material was applicable for utilization on future high-performance interceptors. The GY70/Fiberite 934 ultra-high modulus unidirectional tapes were used in design of the basic shell structure in the subscale development program. Laminate design was determined by analysis to meet the required strength and stiffness. Titanium shims were used for reinforcement in the regions of the splice joints. Fabrication drawings were prepared for the basic conical shell and shells with reinforced joints. Static tests were conducted for ten basic shells to determine strength and stiffness and to establish a strength envelope under combined axial compression and bending loads. Two shock tests and two static tests were conducted on four shells with joint reinforcements. The shock tests were conducted to simulate stage separation shock. Test data were evaluated and the results and conclusions are given in this report.
