Abstract : Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) is the most promising near-term replacement for fluorine in a DF chemical laser. Safety and compatibility characteristics of NF3 have been scattered through the literature since the gas was first prepared by Ruff in 1928. Most of the data have been obtained to outline the general chemical behavior of NF3 and leave many critical safety, compatibility and environmental questions unanswered. Moreover, some of the data found in the literature are erroneous. As part of the Advance Reactants Program at the Naval Surface Weapons Center, an experimental program was conducted to: (1) determine safety and compatibility characteristics of NF3 under various conditions with gases, liquids, and solids with which it might come into contact; (2) survey the available toxicity data; (3) develop adequate detection techniques; and (4) recommend safe handling, fire-fighting, and emergency disposal methods.
