Abstract : This report reviews the available physiological, psychological, and sociological data concerning human response to sonic booms. The additional research that is required to develop criteria for certification of supersonic aircraft is described in conveniently workable units. Our recommendations include the relative priorities and the appropriate sequence of accomplishment of these units. The recommended research areas are: physiology - sleep interference and stress-induced disease; psychology - startle, judged annoyance, and task interference; and sociology - attitudes, complaint behavior, group action, and possible effects of the boom on social structure.
