Abstract : Biological assessment studies of the standard elutriate have been conducted using selected species of algae, bacteria, and protozoans as representative test organisms. Algal bioassays have proven useful in providing information about the biologically available nutrients released from the sediments. Growth was determined by measuring the maximum number of cells per milliliter of treatment. The treatments included 100-percent disposal site water, 100-percent elutriate, and various combinations of elutriate and disposal site water. Elutriates prepared from some locations stimulated algal growth when compared with the growth obtained in the disposal site water. Other elutriate preparations demonstrated an inhibitory effect toward growth of the test algae. The algal assay procedure is a useful method for evaluating potential effects of dredging material disposal on phytoplankton at the proposed discharge site.
