Abstract : Research in two areas of human information processing--attribution theory and judgment under conditions of uncertainty--is characterized and compared. Differences in the picture of people's inferential ability which emerge from the two areas are highlighted and attributed, in part, to researchers' paradigmatic conventions. Ways to reduce the divergence of these two fundamentally complementary lines of investigation are suggested.
