Abstract : Our study is a multi-center prospective randomized treatment trial investigating if supplemental perioperative oxygen use will reduce surgical site infection after surgery on fractures with a high risk of infection. The study utilizes the DOD-funded Major Extremity Research Consortium (METRC). The study population is calcaneus, pilon, and tibial plateau fractures. During the first year we created a protocol committee, designed and approved the protocol and CRFs, obtained IRB approval. We have enrolled 1000 patients at 20 centers. Follow up rate has been strong with 91 at 12 months. Based on feedback from the DSMB we have increased our enrollment goal to 1200 and anticipate achieving this in the next 6 months.
