Abstract : The current study explored the use of wearable sensors during squad exercises as a way to objectively assess leader and follower interactions. Officer candidates from the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School (N = 30) wore sociometric sensors during rigorous squad-level field training exercises to collect Bluetooth and infrared data. Despite the small sample, data analyses indicated differences in behaviors between squad leaders, particularly with regard to communication patterns within the squad. Findings are presented along with recommendations regarding future development and research objectives and a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the wearable sensor technology.
