Abstract : A computer program was developed to calculate the Mie scattering from yttrium oxide (Y2O3) crystallites embedded in a magnesium oxide (MgO) polycrystalline matrix. The calculation takes into account the volume fraction of Y2O3 in MgO, the average particle size, and the path length through the material to generate an expected light transmission spectrum. These calculated curves were compared to experimental transmission data obtained from prepared Y2O3/MgO nanocomposite materials to determine the average Y2O3 particle size. The results were used to determine optimal growth parameters leading to minimized scattering in subsequent material part preparation.
