Abstract : This study tells the story of General John D. Lavelle's dismissal as Commander, Seventh Air Force, during the Vietnam War. Tracing the life and career of General Lavelle prior to outlining the events surrounding his 1972 dismissal, the author then outlines the trajectories of the Lavelle case. The Lavelle affair represented to some a negative example of civil-military relations; to others, it represented a case study in ethical transgressions.
