Abstract : The CVN 78 Gerald R. Ford Class Nuclear Aircraft Carrier (CVN 78) is the planned successor to the NIMITZ-class (CVN 68) aircraft carrier. The CVN 78 mission is to provide credible, sustainable, independent forward presence during peacetime without access to land bases; operate as the cornerstone of a joint and/or allied maritime expeditionary force in response to crisis; and carry the war to the enemy through joint multi-mission offensive operations by: (a) being able to operate andsupport aircraft in attacks on enemy forces ashore, afloat, or submerged independent of forward-based land facilities, (b) protecting friendly forces from enemy attack through the establishment and maintenance of battle space dominance independent of forward-based land facilities, and (c) engaging in sustained operations in support of the United States and its allies independent of forward-based land facilities.
