Abstract : The present curriculum covers successful strategies and best practices for building and sustaining foreign organizations. In particular, the curriculum addresses intercultural dynamics and strategies that work in collectivist cultures where U.S. military advisors and other senior U.S. government leaders are likely to be assigned. Based on the review of literature and interviews with subject matter experts, a strengths-based method of inquiry is employed as a centerpiece of the curriculum. This approach has been shown to increase buy-in among counterparts, and to facilitate nation-led solutions to identified problems. The present curriculum is video- and discussion-based and is meant not only to inform future advisors about how to work more effectively with counterparts, but also to promote critical thinking skills, group discussion, and class participation. The DVD is available from the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) and can also be obtained by contacting the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences at the above address. For more information on the development of the curriculum please refer to ARI Technical Report, Development and Evaluation of Training to Build and Sustain Foreign Counterpart Organizations.
