Abstract : Both physical oceanographic processes and marine geological features in the areas of continental shelf and shelfbreak can cause horizontal heterogeneity in medium properties, so horizontal refraction and reflection of sound can occur and produce significant three-dimensional (3-D) sound propagation effects. The long-term goals of this project are targeted on understanding the 3-D acoustic effects, and their temporal and spatial variability, caused by the environmental factors existing commonly in the continental shelf and shelfbreak areas, such as slopes, submarine canyons, sub-bottom layers, surface waves, internal waves and shelfbreak fronts.
