Abstract : Mechanical pain is a major factor in the medical care of soldiers and veterans, whether in acute or chronic injury. Current analgesics, while effective, suffer from a potential for addiction and a variety of negative side effects. We have developed a new class of analgesics based on a peptide that is specific for inhibiting mechanosensitive ion channels. It is non toxic, acts peripherally, may be administered locally or systemically and may be non-addictive. This proposal is to explore the mechanism of action at the cell and molecular level and correlate nerve activation by mechanical stimulation in vitro with pain sensation in animals
