Abstract : The concept of a persistent synthetic environment has existed for years and has gained credibility in the military M and S environment as serious games and massive multiplayer online games (MMOGs). Typical motivations include cost savings through re-use and reduced lead time to availability of simulations. The ideas of persistent synthetic environments (PSEs) are identified and defined. A PSE could exist in several layers of cloud services for users to connect to persistent infrastructure, models, data and storylines. Conceptual models are developed for various kinds of PSEs and their application to simulation problems, along with discussion of advantages, limitations, opportunities and alternatives. The life cycle of simulation infrastructure, models, data, scenario and simulated entities are discussed in the context of their persistence and requirements.
