Abstract : The research project was aimed at improving Er-glass laser material. Optimization of the concentration of the various rare earth oxides contained in the glass is in progress. Fluorescent intensity and lifetime studies indicate that about 0.2 wt. % Nd2O3 is about optimum. Emission wave length for phosphate based glasses may be either 1.543 microns or 1.536 microns depending on the reflectivity of cavity mirrors. Adsorption and emission data are being obtained using liquid nitrogen and liquid helium coolants to obtain the crystal field energy levels of the Er(3+) ion. Initial measurements of ground state de-absorption indicate 35-50% of the ions must be raised to an excited state to reach laser threshold. (Author)
