Abstract : The general method for the determination of the orientation of an aircraft in flight by means of stellar photographs is presented. The mathematical theory of the method is developed, and all necessary formulas and procedures for reducing the data are given. A general discussion of the necessary characteristics of a stellar camera for the task is given, together with principles for deriving specifications for the camera for various operating conditions. Requirements for auxiliary equipment and aids to star identification and measurement are discussed. (Author)
