Abstract : A relationship of air pollution and respiratory illness has been shown in the Kanto Plain area among the armed forces but there is still no agreement as to the exact relationship and whether or not the disease as seen in the Yokohama area is a distinct clinical entity. The probability is that it is not, however, the relationship of asthma and air pollution is very striking and certainly causes an increased amount of difficulty in those who have had a previous history of allergy. During the past year 77 cases were studied and 10 were rejected because of other disease processes other than chronic bronchitis, acute bronchitis, or bronchial asthma. We studied 67 cases by questionnaire and pulmonary function tests were completed on 54. There was one case who had a definite relationship of air pollution of his respiratory illness, having greatly improved in an air filtered and air cleaned room and when he returned to the outside recurrence of symptoms were noted and cleared again on admission to the hospital.
