Abstract : Semi-conducting jackets on buried telephone cable will be subjected to heavy surge currents caused by local lightning strokes to ground. The impulse current strength of a semi-conducting polyethylene compound, having a nominal resistivity of 20 ohm-cm, is measured and the effects of some environmental factors assessed. It is concluded that the probability of surge current rupture of the cable jacket in service is very small except when direct strokes to the cable occur.
