Abstract : A feasibility analysis of adapting the acoustic pressure propellant gage developed under Contract AF04(611)-9081 - reference Technical Report AFRPL-TR-65-155 dated September 1965 - for use with high energy cryogenic propellants, liquid fluorine and liquid hydrogen, was commenced. Studies and investigations to simplify and/or eliminate the gage reference volume were conducted. Preliminary design concepts for preventing the cryogenic propellants from entering the gage and the reference volume chamber were developed. Experimental data regarding the use of screens and a performated stainless steel diaphragm was obtained. Materials compatible with liquid fluorine and liquid hydrogen were analyzed for potential gage application. A complete system analysis and a preliminary error analysis was conducted. Redesign of a more stable variable frequency oscillator circuit was accomplished. Experimental breadboards using photoresistors, in lieu of field effect transistors used in the earlier design, showed significant improvement in performance. A simplified signal conditioning circuit to replace the operational amplifiers previously used in the gage electronics was developed. Various configurations of acoustic pressure pick-up transducers were analyzed; a specific design for future evaluation has been selected. (Author)
