Abstract : There is a need for specific, sensitive direct methods for the detection of a variety of functional groups or moieties. During this reporting period, procedures for the detection of glycolic acid derivatives, carbamates, heterocyclic nitrogen compounds, tertiary amines, and quaternary salts, indoles, thiolamines, and cyanide were investigated. A boric acid-styryl base system, which responds to glycolic acid derivatives, still appears promising, but requires a styryl base, which undergoes a color change at pH 8.0 to pH 6.5. Aconitic acid responds to all carbamates and a hypochlorite-phenol reagent appears fairly general. Most systems evaluated for carbamates are limited in the types of carbamates they detect. Potassium iodoplatinate is promising as a reagent for both teritiary amines and wuaternary salts, whereas, cobalt thiocyanate detects only quarternary salts. The 5,5'-dithiobis (2-nitrobenzoic acid) reagent is a good reagent for the detection of aliphatic thiols. Several reagents and procedures were evaluated for the detection of cyanide ion, and it was found that 4',4-dipyridyl-dimedone reagent proved to be very sensitive. (Author)
