Abstract : Testing techniques for evaluating experimental gas turbine lubricants in face-riding main shaft jet engine seals at temperatures representative of high mach aircraft have been under development. Using a newly designed RTD Seal Head a repeatable evaluation procedure has been developed for evaluating lubricants at the 350 F bulk lubricant temperature level. A total of thirteen lubricants has been evaluated and relatively rated in regard to test rig life determined by seal-lubricant interaction. Additional information on deposit forming characteristics, viscosity and acid number change, seal wear, and oil consumption is reported for each lubricant evaluated. (Author)
