Abstract : Work during the first two quarters was concentrated on the various available techniques for the development of individual stages required for an all-solid-state Ku-band multiplier of minimum size and weight and maximum efficiency. Highlights of the first quarter included the development of an X-band oscillator with a power output of 100 milliwatts at 10 G Hz from a drive source of 1 watt at 1.25 GHz. The entire unit had a volume of approximately 8 cubic inches and a tuning bandwidth of 2.5 percent. The drive source used in this experiment was a triode tube oscillator. In later experiments, the triode tube oscillator was replaced with a transistor oscillator, which provided 2.2 watts at 1.25 GHz. The completely-solid-state X-band power source was demonstrated with a power output of 175 milliwatts at 10 GHz with an over-all efficiency from DC to RF of 3 percent. Work is in progress to enhance the over-all efficiency and increase the power output to beyond 250 milliwatts at X-band. This unit will then be modified to operate at 8.125 GHz which, in conjunction with a varactor doubler, will provide the necessary power output and tuning to fulfill the requirements of this contract.
