Abstract : The purpose of the research was to develop synthesis methods for realizing an analog-to-digital conversion system with threshold elements defined, more generally, as a system that maps a set of input vectors in an n-dimensional space into the vertices of a k-dimensional binary cube according to some desired manner. For each dimension of the k-cube, a switching function of n analog variables will thus be specified. The main effort was directed toward realization of nonlinearly separable switching function of analog variables with threshold elements. Two synthesis methods based on quantization approach are developed, i.e., cross-quantization realization and parallel-quantization realization. The first utilizes switching theory as a tool, which requires fewer coding variables than cross-quantization realization by any other existing method. Second method uses linear algebra as medium for analysis and synthesis. Weight vector that determines orientation of parallel hyperplanes is obtained from a sequence of processes of solving an eigenvector associated with maximum eigenvalue of symmetric positive semi-definite matrix, and can be automated easily by use of a digital computer.
