Abstract : A significant problem that confronts R and D management organizations like ONR and DoD is the classification of information for storage and retrieval. The initial objective of the study described was a study of classification theory so that criteria could be established for evaluation of the effectiveness of existing systems. This study and subsequent evaluation of (classification) systems was directed toward formulation of design criteria for a universal flexible classification system that could better satisfy the needs of R and D management organizations. An automatic classification penetrating technique that was developed to meet these criteria is presented. The description includes both managerial and technological aspects of the proposed systems' operation. How the technique whose algorithm has been computerized, could be tested through performance of a series of experiments is also presented. The experimental process discussed is the basis for work related to this project. The final subject addressed is how the proposed classification technique could be used as part of an integrated R and D management information system. (Author)
