Abstract : The first quarter of this project was devoted primarily to the selection of an optimum material for the construction of a wideband traveling wave optical modulator. The most promising material uncovered in this survey was KDA. In this quarter we have continued our investigation into the detailed properties of KDA. Rods of KDA, 2mm in cross section and 20mm long, were purchased and optically polished. The thermal conductivity and the temperature dependents of birefringence and index of refraction were measured for these KDA rods. The preliminary microwave design for a modulator using KDA was completed. This microwave design includes not only the dimensioning of the modulator body proper but also the design of the transition elements which bridge the gap between the type-N connector and the modulator proper.
