Abstract : A brief review is given of the basic principles which govern the absorption of infrared radiation by molecules, with emphasis on the factors which govern the qualitative features of the observed spectra. This is used as a basis for the examination of the infrared spectra of water vapor and of carbon dioxide. The characteristics of the individual bands are discussed in terms of the underlying theory and are illustrated by experimental absorption curves derived from the published literature.
