Abstract : In the first quarter of this contract, a literature search was conducted on materials and phenomena which are relevant to this program. The resulting bibliography is included as an appendix to this report. All experimental work has been performed at room temperature. Acoustic wave propagation has been investigated in rods of YAG, YIG, rutile, (TiO2), ruby and sapphire. Magnetoelastic wave propagation for C-band frequencies has been studied in YIG rods with both axial and transverse fields, and in normally-magnetized YIG disks. CdS transducers, made by the evaporation technique, have been prepared and evaluation is in progress. The transducer conversion efficiency of YIG has also been measured. A discussion is included in this report describing two mechanisms for the excitation of spin waves in magnetic materials. Crystals were grown of YIG, YAG, and LiNbO3. (Author)
