Abstract : The aims of this study are the improvement of meteorological balloon performance in general by improving the basic polymers and formulations and by improvements to compounding and manufacturing procedures. In addition, the development of a balloon capable of reaching an altitude of 150,000 feet at not less than 1,250 feet per minute will be considered as a goal. As a result of theoretical calculations conducted, a formula relating balloon weight and altitude was developed, and a carrier balloon assembly was designed using these calculations as a basis. One balloon based on this design reached an altitude of 156,390 feet at 1510 feet per minute. Work also was done on a one piece spherical balloon, but it proved to fall short of the required rate of ascent. Progress was made in the evaluation of new synthetic latices, elastomers, and compounding ingredients. (Author)
