Abstract : The effect of pulsed laser radiation in the range of 400 to 2800 cal/sq cm on various materials is described. The types of damage observed are vaporization, melting, thermally induced spallation, and chemical reaction. Laser irradiation has produced significant increases in hardness in the damage sites of high purity iron and iron alloys. Volume of damage sites for the various materials was compared with a Melting Damage Parameter based on reflectivity, thermal diffusivity, melting point, and optical absorptivity; the agreement is good.
