Abstract : The work conducted on an infrared spectrum shifter, for the investigation of the feasibility of design of a high-power thermionic converter and for the development of infrared sources in the wavelength range 3 - 4 microns, is described. Main emphasis in the design of the converter was given to a cesium-plasma type of unit. A self-contained converter with tungsten emitter and molybdenum collector, capable of producing an output power of the order of 10 watts, was developed. In addition, several novel approaches of design were studied; these involved vacuum-type converters and aimed at utilizing rather than minimizing the space charge for the production of output power. Three infrared sources were provided--i.e., A HeNe laser (3.39 microns), a Xe laser (3.5 microns), and an InAs diode emitter (3.1 microns). Two systems (one to house either the HeNe or the Xe laser, and the other to house the InAs emitter) were built. (Author)
