Abstract : This report covers work on thermionic converters, generators, and thermionic converter additives. Efforts included emitter work function measurements of seven converters which are on life-test and collector work function measurements of these converters. The work function measurements were taken at about 1500-hour intervals on the steady-state life-test converters and about 1000 cycle intervals on the cyclic converters. No appreciable change in the work function of either the emitter or the collector was found with time of operation. Metalurgical and chemical analysis was performed on converters which failed during the reporting period, and the results are presented. Two converters of the 402-series are still being life-tested. These converters are being operated on a steady-state basis, and the lead converter has passed 9000 hours at the end of the reporting period which constitutes over a year of continuous operation. All converters operate at 0.7 volt and an emitter temperature of 2000 K. At these conditions the power density output obtained is 16.5 and 18 W/sq cm, respectively.
