Abstract : The method of converting the primary 3,200-cps power of the SNAP 50/SPUR power system to 200 cps and 400 cps for supplying the specified motor loads was studied in detail, and a bidirectional, half-wave, blanking type of cycloconverter, with three-phase output, was selected. Special effort was applied to the study of the high frequency operating conditions and characteristics of the silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR's) in the frequency converter because these units are the most important and critical components in the converter. Analog test equipment for the converter circuits was built and extensive tests were carried out. As a result of conflict in available information, an investigation of the effect of a nuclear environment on the characteristics of SCR's and other semiconductors was intensified. (Author)
