Abstract : This effort was aimed at the development of new methods of using the high current carrying capability of the mercury cathode while at the same time attaining higher voltage holdoff than is possible in a conventional ignitron type device. A device was designed utilizing low pressure (i.e. cooled pool) to get higher voltage holdoff and using a plasma injection scheme as the trigger. Preliminary devices have been operated for more than 100 hours with an anode current rise time of about 12 nanoseconds. Another model was tested to 85 KV, 8000 amps in a single shot mode of operation. (Author)
