Abstract : The purpose of this program is to develop a low-weight Low Input Voltage Converter Regulator (LIVCR) that will be optimized for incorporation with specific thermoelectric and/or thermionic sources into a reliable and efficient power system. The core characteristics of high permeability toroids that have partial air gaps were investigated. These investigations indicate that the performance of LIVCRs can be improved by introducing a gap in the feedback and power transformer core and that the gap can be designed for a specific application. A breadboarded fuel control servo system adaptable to basic LIVCR circuitry showed that this was a feasible approach to control a fuel rate valve in proportion to the LIVCR load when operating from a simulated thermoelectric generator source characteristic. Operating frequencies up to 10 kc/s for the LIVCR power oscillator are included in development testing. Various transistors and composite cores are being investigated as circuit components. The inductance parameters of various LIVCR input lead geometries, sizes, and separation were considered as part of the source-LIVCR interface study. Coaxial or tape leads with small separation have generally lower inductance than comparable cross section round wires. (Author)
