Abstract : The immediate purpose of this work has been to develop defense, low loss BeO-TiO2 bodies. Several techniques were utilized to either prevent the intrinsic reduction of TiO2 at the sintering temperature, or to neutralize this reduction effect. The techniques were as follows: preparation of thin specimens which would allow oxygen diffusion throughout; sintering under one atmosphere of oxygen pressure; hot pressing at 1350 C; firing in a fluorine atmosphere; and doping with UO3. Success was not achieved with any of these techniques. Highly sintered bodies invariably exhibited high dissipation factors of the order of magnitude of 0.01; these bodies possessed the characteristic dark bluish-gray interiors which were semiconducting, with d-c resistance of 1,000-100,000 ohms.
