Abstract : The retention of well trained and qualified junior officers in the United States Navy has long been a serious problem that is becoming more acute every day. This study compares certain relevant factors of both the navy and industry that affect retention of officers and junior executives alike. It analyzes the problems confronting young men about to select a career in either the navy or industry, with the hope that it can make sound recommendations on how to increase the retention rate in the navy. The appendix contains an analysis of an entirely new and radical approach to induce young officers to seek a career as a naval officer. (Author)
