Abstract : This report discusses the developmnent and testing of a communications channel monitor system. The system continuously monitors a communications channel on a non-interfering basis by combining a low-level, spread-spectrum, frequency-division multiplex probe signal with the transmitted data and deriving channel-distortion characteristics from the received probe signal. Correlation techniques are applied separately to five subcarrier bands to measure relative delay distortion and relative amplitude distortion across the channel bandwidth. The system automatically corrects for frequency translation within specified limits, counts noise impulses in the channel, and detects channel discontinuity. Theoretical aspects of the development, circuit operation, and system testing are discussed. (Author)
