Abstract : Two geological and geophysical cruises of R/V CHAIN were mounted in the North Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Echo soundings, measurements of gravity and magnetic field intensity, continuous seismic profiles, bottom samples by dredging and coring, heat flow probes and bottom-photographs were taken. On a third cruise of CHAIN, thermal fronts, internal waves and bottom reflectivity were investigated in the deep-sea near Bermuda. Analyses of geophysical and geological data from the Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Indian Ocean, and North Atlantic Ocean were completed or underway. Theoretical and experimental work on arrays of hydrophones for receiving seismic reflection signals continued. Design and assembly of a rigid three-wire anchored subsurface buoy for acoustic and other investigations on the Blake Plateau is proceeding. A towed thermistor-string system for recording a temperature profile of the upper 1500 feet of seawater is being developed. Components of a deep-towed fish are being assembled to improve ship's navigation. Papers published or submitted for publication concern bioluminescence, benthic fish in the Red Sea, improvements to the seismic profiler, deep-sea sound-transmission paths, submarine canyons near Georges Bank, the geophysics and geology of the western Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Greater Antilles, and a device for hauling large electrical cables aboard ship.
