Abstract : The electrons in a beam of finite diameter passing through a Cuccia coupler are velocity modulated in the axial stray field at the entrance to the coupler. For a hollow beam rotating with cyclotron frequency in an axial magnetic field, the resulting beam-loading conductance will be negative for certain combinations of the parameters involved. An oscillator based on this mechanism has been built and tested. The resonant frequency of the cold coupler was about 600 MHz. Oscillations were observed for different operating conditions as expected, but the efficiency of the device was rather low. The RF frequency could be changed by varying the axial magnetic field or the axial velocity of the electrons. Experiments with transverse-wave amplifiers have revealed that similar oscillations can occur even when thin beams from magnetically shielded guns are employed, but there seems to be no possibility that these oscillations are due to the same mechanism.
