Abstract : Experimental work was performed on gamma-detecting scintillators involving extreme compression of inorganic crystals and powders. The mixing of inorganic salts and organic fluors in highly compressed samples or in low-melting glasses culminated in the preparation of metaphosphate glasses. These glasses have high chemical stability, high density, low neutron sensitivity, a wide temperature range of application, and a fluorescence decay time of 10 to the -8th sec; but, compared to the response of sodium-iodide scintillators, they are poor in gamma sensitivity. It is believed that these glasses can be made with a sensitivity comparable to that of sodium iodide. (Author)
