Abstract : Current experimental studies, at E.R.D.E. and elsewhere, on various aspects of the combustion of ammonium perchlorate-based propellants are discussed in relation to an accepted model for composite propellant burning. The nature of the chemical processes taking place at the solid/gas interface and the possibility of heat release in the condensed phase are considered. A summary of the results of surface temperature measurements on ammonium perchlorate burning under a variety of conditions from 0.8 to 300 p.s.i.a. is presented. Although the evidence is that some heat release is likely to occur within the solid surface, the combustion in all pressure regions appears to be dominated by gas phase reactions. Results with catalysts which are supposed to increase the extent of the condensed phase reaction do not alter this conclusion.
