Abstract : A method is described by which the organic solvent-soluble components of 1 ml. of serum are extracted and purified. The extract is dried and weighed to determine the total lipid content. The dried extract is then redissolved in petroleum ether and pipetted onto a prepared column of silicic acid from which the four major components (cholesteryl esters, nonesterified cholesterol, glycerides, and phospholipids) are eluted separately and are quantitated by spectrophotometric methods. Detailed procedures are given for each step in the analysis. (Author)
