Abstract : This is a program to explore and optimize the variables in the lithium-cupric fluoride and the lithium-cobaltic fluoride electrochemical system with the final goal of building and testing 1500 amp-hr batteries with high (300 whr/lb) energy-to-weight figures. This report contains experimental data on the electrolyte and cupric fluoride and cobaltic fluoride cathodes. In addition, fabrication methods for anodes are discussed and calorimetric and transient voltage data for the lithium-cupric fluoride system are presented. Lithium-cobaltic fluoride cells discharged at 0.25 ma/sq in. have shown considerable temperature sensitivity and some interaction with the conductive additive. Lithium-cupric fluoride cells have been discharged at currents of 1-3 ma/sq in. Transient voltages recorded when discharge is interrupted indicate polarization with slow recovery and a small ohmic resistance component of the change between open circuit and load conditions. The best values for heat of reaction of the lithium-cupric fluoride cell during discharge are -73 to -77 kcal/equivalent for a reaction with one electron change (n=1). (Author)
