Abstract : The purpose of this manufacturing process development program was to make improved refractory metal tubing by planetary ball swaging. Techniques were developed for the primary breakdown of refractory alloys into suitable tube blanks. A planetary ball swaging machine was designed, constructed and used as a processing method for converting the tube blanks into various size refractory metal tubes. The tubing was characterized by destructive and non-destructive testing. Swaging schedules were developed to process the refractory metal tube blanks into 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8-inch OD tubing with 0.020, 0.015 and 0.010-inch wall thickness respectively. Destructive and non-destructive testing was carried out to characterize the tubing. Ultimate tensile strength for the Ta - 10 w/o W tubes at room temperature and in the cold-worked condition was between 146,000 and 152,000 psi. All tubes passed helium leak testing but imperfections were detected in the Cb-752 tubes by Zyglo and ultrasonics. The defects appeared to be minor and to have little or no effect on mechanical properties, except for reduced flarability in the 1/8-inch Cb-752 tube. All finished tubes were found to be within target specifications dimensionally, with surface finishes equal to or better than 4 micro-inches. (Author)
