Abstract : A sample compact leading edge transpiration system consisting of a small diameter coolant tube that is perforated or porous along its forward surface is described. The tube is lying at right angles to the high speed flow and is located on the thin forward portion of a flight body. Hand-calculated delivery system temperatures and pressures for steady one-dimensional cases are presented and discussed to give an idea of the elements of the problem. The sample transpiration system presented is only for discussion and is not to be regarded as the recommended system nor as the only system that can be handled by the procedures developed. The problem of the generalized compact transpiration system is considered and finite difference equations are proposed for solution of multi-dimensional problems under transient flight conditions. Establishment of the finite difference equations is the first step toward modifying the existing BBE heat transfer computer program to include transpiration cooling. (Author)
