Abstract : Unit control has evolved over a period of several thousand years. The control of military units is based upon the organizational formation for combat and upon the weaponry then currently in common usage. Leadership at all levels and a system of battlefield communication are essential elements for the establishment and maintenance of unit control. Historically, the evolution of unit control falls into two distinct periods: The Ancient and Modern.
