Abstract : It was determined that shot peening has a significant beneficial effect on the fatigue properties of damaged bare and damaged plated 4340 steel (260 ksi), particularly upon the fatigue life at stresses above the fatigue limit. It was further established that short peening is more beneficial in recovery of mild damage than it is in the recovery of severe damage. There are indications that shot peening of steel damaged to an extremely severe degree has a further deleterious effect on the fatigue properties of the damaged steel.
