Abstract : This report presents the results of a study to determine whether a simulation could be developed to evaluate competing or alternative concepts for military theater transportation systems. The research was initiated in December 1963 and was conducted over a period of approximately 8 months. The study defines the primary characteristics of a theater transportation system, describes the manner in which they would be represented in a simulation, and indicates the extent to which they would affect the performance of the system. Although it is felt that the basic elements of such a system and their interrelations have been adequately defined, the validity of the results to be derived from such a model and their usefulness cannot be completely evaluated until the proposed model has been reduced to a computer program and tested against realistic data. The model described in this report is considered to provide a means for evaluating alternative concepts for transport-vehicle allocations and operating doctrines. It is believed that this model will be useful to any further studies aimed at establishing a working simulation of a theater transportation system. (Author)
